Saint Elizabeth

Today the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Elizabeth, cousin to the Blessed Mother and mother to John the Baptist. Elizabeth and her husband lived childless for most of their married life, until God graciously granted them a son in their old age, who is now known as the greatest Prophet, John the Baptist.

When the Blessed Mother travelled to Judah to help care for Elizabeth in her pregnancy, Elizabeth felt the child she carried leap in her womb with joy as the Blessed Mother approached, pregnant herself with Our Lord. Immediately the Holy Spirit spoke through her as she proclaimed in Luke 1:42-45,
"Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."
Saint Elizabeth is the patroness of pregnant women.
