Saint Martin of Tours was a soldier in the 300s. He was very courageous and holy. Still in the process of becoming a Catholic, Martin was once riding through the city when he met a beggar on the side of the road. Without hesitation, Martin drew his sword and sliced his expensive cloak in half, giving one half to the beggar. That night, Martin had a vision in which Our Lord appeared wearing his cloak. Angels and Saints surrounded Our Lord as He said to them,
"See, this is the cloak that Martin gave to Me." When he awoke from this vision, Martin could not wait another moment to be baptized.
Years later, Martin became very well-known for his holiness and piety. When the Bishop of Tours died, the people decided they wanted Martin as Bishop, and so he was consecrated. He lived as a monk in solitude as much as he could, though this lifestyle is nearly impossible for a Bishop.
Martin died on November 8 when he was over 80 years old. He was buried on November 11, which is his feast day. He is the patron saint of soldiers.
Feast Day: November 11
