Saint Columban lived a troubled life in his youth, tormented by temptations of the flesh. After seeking spiritual advice, he felt called to live the secluded life of a monk. Traveling from Ireland to southern Europe, Columban was effective in converting many, calling people away from the life of materialism. Though he met much opposition, the Church was always on his side, and he built many monasteries for men and women to dedicate their lives to God. He died in 615.
